How to Show Up in AI Answers: Write for Two Readers
TL;DR: To show up in AI answers, write every page for two readers at once: open each section with one claim a machine can quote out of context, then give the human a reason to keep reading. White Wood calls this Dual Legibility. Pages that serve only the machine read like fact sheets; pages that serve only the human give engines nothing to lift.
AI answers quote fragments, not whole pages. If your strongest sentence is buried in paragraph four, an engine will quote someone else’s.
1. Answer the question in your first sentence
Pages that answer a question in their first sentence match the way AI answers are triggered. In a Washington University audit of 55,393 trending Google searches, AI Overviews appeared for 64.7% of question-form searches against 9.5% of other searches (WashU, 29 Sep 2026). Buyers ask questions. Put the answer where an engine looks first: a short summary box at the top, not a warm-up paragraph.
2. Open every section with a claim that stands alone
A section’s first sentence should be true and complete even if it is the only line an engine quotes. The same WashU audit found an average AI Overview cited about eight sources, and 29.8% of cited domains were not on page one. Rank does not guarantee the quote; a clean, self-contained sentence makes you easier to use. Avoid openers like “This is why it matters”, which mean nothing out of context.
3. Keep the story underneath
Stripping a page down to bullets makes it quotable for machines and useless for buyers. Google’s helpful content guidance names effort, originality, talent or skill, and accuracy as what it looks for in main content (Google Search Central). After the claim, write two to four sentences with a real opinion, an example or a trade-off. That is where a buyer decides whether to trust you.
4. Source every number, or leave it out
Engines already make mistakes with sources, so a page with traceable numbers is a safer page to cite. WashU found that about 11% of verifiable claims in AI Overviews lacked support in, or contradicted, the pages they cited. Google’s generative AI guidance says it is “critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content” before publishing (Google Search Central). Link the source next to the number.
5. Write the Indonesian page natively, not as a translation
In Indonesia, 84% of Gemini prompts are written in a local language, so the Indonesian page has to stand on its own. The figure comes from Google’s internal data for January to March 2026 (The Gemini Report). A line-by-line translation reads stiffly to people and often misses the words they actually type.
Fact sheet, flowery prose, or both
| Page type | What the machine gets | What the human gets | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fact sheet (bullets, tables, FAQ dump) | Easy fragments | No reason to read | Quoted, rarely trusted |
| Flowery prose (scene-setting, no structure) | Nothing clean to lift | A story, slowly | Read by some, quoted by none |
| Dual Legibility | One liftable claim per section | An argument with examples | Quotable and worth reading |
And one shortcut to skip: Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode (Google Search Central). The writing is the work.
Where White Wood fits
White Wood is a GEO agency in Jakarta that gets brands named in AI answers, using its Narrative Architecture method and SOLEDAD measurement. SOLEDAD is our AI answer monitoring engine. Dual Legibility is the writing rule behind every page we make, and we discussed the tension between writing for machines and for people on Proxemics episode 036. Our journal follows the same rule, including which AI prompts to fight for.
FAQ
How do I show up in AI answers? Answer the buyer’s question in your first sentence, open each section with a claim that stands alone, source your numbers, and publish natively in the language your buyers use. There is no special markup that replaces this.
Is Dual Legibility just SEO with a new name? It builds on SEO. The difference is the unit: engines quote sentences, so every section needs one sentence that works alone.
How long should a page be? Long enough to answer the question and make the argument, and no longer.
