How brands show up in AI search results

Short answer: “AI search results” usually means AI layers on Search (AI Overviews / AI Mode) — not the same as chat answers in ChatGPT/Gemini. What brands can control: clear answer pages, extractable facts, and retrievability. A citation in an Overview is not a guaranteed click.

Quick facts

  • “AI search results” ≈ AI Overviews / AI Mode on Search — not the same as ChatGPT/Gemini chat answers.
  • Brands can control: answer-first pages, extractable facts, and page retrievability.
  • An Overview citation ≠ a guaranteed click; report presence apart from classic organic traffic.
  • As of August 2026 public reports, GSC Generative AI can show impressions — not clicks and not queries for that surface.
  • Pages that often get extracted: 2–4 sentence answer first, pinned facts, short Q&A, clear entity.
  • llms.txt alone is not proof “we’re in AI search now.”
  • Baseline first: for buyer prompts, does brand/URL appear in Overviews or AI Mode — yes/no + source.

Don’t mix metrics. Showing up in chat ≠ automatically showing in Overviews, and the reverse.

What GSC can (and can’t) show

As of August 2026 public reports, Generative AI reporting in Search Console can show impressions — but not clicks and not queries for that surface. Don’t force classic “clicks / queries” dashboards onto a layer that doesn’t report them yet. Measure citations and answer presence with a separate method when you need prompt-level detail.

Citation ≠ click

A model can name or link your source in an AI block without a user click. That’s still a presence signal — but don’t sell it to leadership as “AI traffic.” Report citation / presence apart from classic organic clicks.

Page shape that often gets extracted (Jakarta-readable)

Buyer prompt example: “how long does business licensing take for SMEs in Jakarta?”

Pages that get pulled usually have:

  • Answer first — 2–4 direct sentences, no soft lead
  • Pinned facts — stable numbers, requirements, or numbered steps
  • Short Q&A — natural-language questions that echo intent
  • Clear entity — who said it, where, for whom

Not a 2,000-word mill that reaches the point in paragraph 12.

What isn’t the door

  • Treating llms.txt as “we’re in AI search now”
  • Blue-link ranking hacks as the only Overview strategy
  • Inventing GSC numbers that aren’t in your account

FAQ

Different from “showing up in AI answers”?

Chat answers = model conversation. AI search results = AI layers on Search. Controls overlap; surfaces differ.

Do you need Search ads?

Ads ≠ citation in Overviews. Page foundations remain the main job.

What to measure first?

Baseline: for your buyer prompts, does the brand / URL appear in Overviews or AI Mode — yes/no + source. Then change pages.
