ChatGPT Visits Can Hide in Your Direct Traffic

ChatGPT visits get counted as Direct in Google Analytics when a link arrives with neither its chatgpt.com tag nor a referrer. SOLEDAD, White Wood’s AI-monitoring engine, found utm_source=chatgpt.com on all 1,142 ChatGPT source links it logged from 18 September to 8 October 2026, and on none of the 44 from 15 and 16 October.

1. How Google Analytics decides a visit came from AI

Google Analytics sorts each visit by its campaign tags first and its referrer second, and with neither it records the visit as Direct. Google’s help pages say the referrer may set the source when no campaign or traffic-source fields are present, and that a session with no information about its source is processed as direct traffic. Since 13 May 2026, Analytics has had an AI Assistant channel for visits whose referrer matches a known assistant, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Deepseek or Grok. Clicks from Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode are not in it. Google counts those as Organic Search.

So an AI visit can end up in three places: AI Assistant, Organic Search, or Direct when the trail is gone.

2. What happened to ChatGPT’s tag in October

For a stretch in mid October, ChatGPT links lost the tag that tells your analytics where a visit came from. Search Engine Land, the search-marketing trade site, reported on 20 October 2026 that OpenAI confirmed the missing tags were a known bug and that a fix began rolling out early on 15 October. The same report says most ChatGPT clicks carry no referrer either, so for many visits the tag is the only trail.

Our own reads match that picture. SOLEDAD reads the source links in ChatGPT’s answers for our 10 tracked prompts every day. Up to 8 October every link carried the tag. SOLEDAD logged no ChatGPT links from 9 to 14 October, so we cannot date the start ourselves. On 15 and 16 October, 17 answers carried 44 links and none was tagged. From 17 October all 68 links had the tag again.

Only some engines add their own tag, and the habit changes without notice. Here is what SOLEDAD logged across the same prompts, 18 September to 18 October 2026:

EngineSource links loggedLinks with an engine tagTag value

Copilot864429copilot.com

Google AI Mode1,3330none

Two engines switched habits inside the month. Copilot tagged 75 of 510 links up to 8 October and all 354 after it. Gemini went the other way: 182 of 657 links up to 8 October, then none of 273. Perplexity links never carried a tag in our reads, so a Perplexity visit can only be identified by its referrer.

4. What to check in your own reports

Treat any drop in AI Assistant traffic from 8 to 16 October as a possible tagging gap before you read it as lost demand. Four checks we run for clients:

  1. Add an annotation in Analytics for 8 to 16 October so nobody reads that week as a trend later. The report suggests 8 to 15; we run it to 16 because our reads were still untagged that day.
  2. Build an exploration with session source as the dimension and filter for “chatgpt.com”. This catches tagged visits whatever channel they landed in.
  3. Compare Direct sessions to your deep pages, such as articles and price pages, for that week against the two weeks around it. A jump there with no campaign of yours behind it is worth a second look.
  4. Report AI Assistant and Organic Search separately. Mixing them hides which engine moved.

What this cannot tell you

SOLEDAD records the links an engine shows in its answer. It does not see clicks, so it cannot say whether a real visit kept the tag or the referrer. The figures come from our own 10 prompts, mostly about AI marketing, and other topics may show other patterns. We do not know why Gemini and Copilot changed their tagging. A tag only appears when someone clicks; an answer that names you and sends no one leaves no trace in Analytics at all.

FAQ

Does the AI Assistant channel include Google’s AI Overviews?

No. Google’s help page says AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks are counted in Organic Search.

Is the AI Assistant channel the same as the chatgpt.com source?

Not necessarily. Google describes the channel as set from the referrer, while the chatgpt.com source comes from the tag on the link. Check both.

Did the bug remove ChatGPT visits from my data?

Visits your analytics recorded are still there. Where both the tag and the referrer were missing, they sit under Direct instead of under ChatGPT.
